The Secret Lives of Spring Blooms
2024
In photography, light serves as both a medium and a messenger. Light photons experience neither space nor time —devoid of mass, they traverse space with an eternal immediacy, transcending the constraints of time as we perceive it, a constant dance through the fabric of existence. Yet, paradoxically, these very photons are necessary to capture time's ephemeral nature in the stillness of a photograph. By exposing silver gelatin paper layered with fresh flowers, this paradox finds embodiment as light initiates a chemical reaction that immortalizes the transient dance of matter and life. While light itself remains untethered from the passage of time, it becomes the conduit to explore the interplay between light, nature, and time.
Lumen printing is one of the earliest forms of photography. Created without a camera, objects are placed directly onto expired photographic paper and then exposed to sunlight. The material qualities of the object intercept the sunlight, manifesting a photograph.
